Icons of ‘90s

Autoworld Museum, Brussels, Belgium

From July 8 to September 6, 2026

With Icons of ‘90s, Autoworld Brussels takes visitors back to one of the most iconic and influential decades in recent history. The 1990s evoke freedom, innovation and pop culture. MTV, video games, grunge, hip-hop, the rise of the Internet and the first mobile phones shaped an entire generation. It was a period marked by rapid technological progress and changing lifestyles, while design, music, film and fashion developed a strong and distinctive identity.

The automotive world also experienced a particularly exciting decade. The ‘90s introduced new technologies, more compact concepts, bold styling, increasing performance and a renewed focus on driving pleasure. Cars became safer, more reliable and more efficient, while also expressing stronger personalities. From city cars and sporty coupés to hot MPVs and supercars, the decade produced models that have since become true automotive icons.

The 1990s marked an important chapter in the history of compact cars. City cars became more playful, practical and original. The Renault Twingo remains one of the most iconic examples: compact, cheerful and surprisingly spacious, while premium manufacturers such as Audi (A2) and Mercedes-Benz (A-Class) also explored new directions.

Following the success of the Golf GTI, the hot hatch segment became a true phenomenon. Affordable, with powerful engines, sporty handling and strong character, compact cars such as the Renault Clio Williams appealed to an entire generation of enthusiasts and evolved into genuine cult classics.

Beyond performance and design, the decade also introduced innovative family vehicles. While the Fiat Multipla may not be a contender for a beauty contest, it perfectly symbolizes this new approach to space, versatility and practicality.

Although convertibles and roadsters had virtually disappeared from global production, nearly every major automaker began offering them again in the 1990s. Open-top driving became a symbol of freedom, enjoyment and the carefree spirit that perfectly matched the decade. The Mazda MX-5 Miata breathed new life into the classic roadster concept and became a global icon. The BMW Z1 or Mercedes SLK offered a more daring and futuristic interpretation, featuring striking design and innovative engineering solutions.

The 1990s also marked the decade when Japanese sports cars firmly secured their place in automotive history. Combining advanced technology, powerful engines and a unique style, manufacturers such as Nissan, Toyota and Honda captivated a new generation of enthusiasts. Models including the Mazda RX7, Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo or Toyota Supra became icons of performance, tuning culture and popular culture. Their reputation is stronger than ever today.

In the 90s, car performance was not limited to compact cars or coupés. Larger segments also saw the arrival of sedans offering impressive performance and strong personalities. Mercedes-Benz 190 Evo and 500E or the Opel Lotus Omega became true references of their time, not forgetting the Subaru Impreza, Ford Escort RS Cosworth or Lancia Delta Integrale, directly derived from rally models.

At the top of every dream garage, sports cars and supercars continued to capture the imagination. Aston Martin DB7, Alfa Romeo SZ, Nissan GTR and Porsche 911 showcase the elegance and performance of the decade. In parallel, the supercar segment also experienced significant growth. Exclusive models such as the Dodge Viper, Ferrari 456 and Honda NSX were pushing the boundaries of design, engineering and performance. This decade also saw the emergence of cars that were more exotic in terms of their style or rarity, such as the Gillet Vertigo, Plymouth Prowler, and TVR Chimaera.

Two-wheelers also play a significant role in the exhibition, with about fifteen models showcasing the resurgence of European brands. BMW R1100GS, Ducati Monster, KTM Duke 620, Laverda 650, MV Agusta F4, Norton F1 or Triumph Speed Triple are all models that have become iconic symbols of their era. The popular mopeds of the time, Honda, Aprilia, and Malaguti are also highlighted.

On the occasion of the exhibition ‘Icons of the ’90s’, Autoworld invites you to a Cars & Coffee dedicated to youngtimers on Sunday 12 July 2026, from 10:00 to 14:00, on the museum esplanade. Owners of oldtimers and youngtimers over 20 years old are welcome to join this gathering of enthusiasts with their vehicles, in a unique setting. Each registered driver will receive a complimentary coffee or soft dring, as well as a reduced admission rate for the museum and the exhibition. Several foodstands will also be available on the terrace. The public will be able to freely admire the cars and enjoy the friendly atmosphere, with free access to the esplanade.
