National Automobile Museum – Schlumpf Collection, Mulhouse, France

The exhibition “From Monaco to Mulhouse – The Collection of Prince Albert II” presents a selection of cars from the collection of H.S.H. the Prince of Monaco. Prince Rainier III, who loved beautiful cars, built up a considerable private collection of vintage vehicles over more than forty years, which was opened to the public in 1993. His son, Prince Albert II, has expanded the collection and given it a new setting on Port Hercule, in the heart of sporting Monaco. The H.S.H. Prince of Monaco’s collection is built around favourites and memories of the dynasty and family life.

The exhibition at the National Automobile Museum presents some twenty cars and evokes more than a century of history of the princely family in the light of its passion for cars. Visitors discover Albert I’s first Humber motorcycle, with which he rode a Tour of France between 1903 and 1905, a 1971 Lotus Seven IV, one of the first cars used by H.S.H. Prince Albert II, or the Lexus LS 600H bodied as a Landaulet for Prince Albert II’s wedding in 2011.

There are also a few doyennes such as a 1911 Humber or a small Peugeot Type 161 from 1921, more prestigious Rolls-Royce Phantom I coupé from 1927 or Silver Wraith from 1953, popular cars such as 2 Fiat 600s in Jolly (beach car) or Lucciola bodies or a Mini from 1952. The 1952 Nash-Healey is a rare roadster, the result of an American-Anglo-Italian collaboration, its Pininfarina design is recognizable by its grille integrating the 2 headlights.

The exhibition will also focus on Monaco, the centre of motor racing, which still makes it famous today. The Monaco Grand Prix and the Monte Carlo Rally are evoked with a 1993 Formula 1 Jordan and a 1985 MG Metro 6R4 Group B rally car. Large-format photographs and videos will punctuate the tour.
