Rochefort
Obviously, this is not a complete tourist guide of the city, there are enough in bookstores and on the internet. Located about half an hour from La Rochelle, Rochefort is less known than the latter but is an interesting alternative stay. No traffic jam, easier parking, Rochefort has many tourist attractions, including the famous Corderie Royale, built under Louis XIV on the banks of the Charente, and remarkably restored into a very interesting museum. Rochefort is also the home port of the Hermione (reconstruction of the 18th century French frigate who sailed to America with La Fayette onboard and joined the Independance war).
Other museums (Hèbre Museum, Pierre Loti’s House, Museum of Shops of the Past, National Museum of the Navy …), Place Colbert (immortalized in the movie Les Demoiselles de Rochefort), walks along the Charente, many shops and restaurants make Rochefort a pleasant city for tourism. It is also a good starting point for coastal trips, to Fouras, the islands of Ré, Aix or Oléron, or to spend a day in La Rochelle.
The Esprit du 8
The Esprit du 8 is a beautiful guest house, located in the vast building of the former sub-prefecture of the city. It has been restored with great taste by its owners, Sandrine and Pascal. The 5 bedrooms are large, all different and furnished in the spirit of famous women designers, with beautiful bright bathrooms. We are in the city center, 5 minutes from Place Colbert, the market or the Corderie Royale. With a few parking spaces in the enclosure, you can shelter your car. The icing on the cake for Automobile Museums visitors, Sandrine and Pascal are vintage cars enthusiasts , and even offer drives around Rochefort, hair in the wind in their beautiful Austin Healey 3000 2+2.
