The appreciation of a car is subjective and differs according to personal preferences. We may love a car for its age, the memories it evokes, its iconic quality or its originality. This exhibition at the Savoy Automobile Museum features eleven cars on loan from local enthusiasts and collectors. Examples of this diversity of tastes are on display. The “Locally Owned” exhibition features a wide variety of cars, most of them American, and representative of several US automotive styles. The oldest is a 1925 Ford T Coupe, preserved in its original state, its rusted bodywork attesting to its age.

The 1939 Mercury “Custom” Coupe combines the main attributes of the category: reduced ground clearance, lowered roof, chrome, white-side tires, paint fillets, and here the chrome side exhausts.

Another custom is the 1957 Chevy 3200 pickup, which no longer has much in the way of a utility vehicle. The 1964 Ford Galaxie 500 XL also passed through the Custom stage, rather discreetly but with a more powerful engine. Another custom, a lowered 1961 Chevrolet Impala, beautiful two-tone paintwork, rounded roof, gold rims retains the rear fins pointing outwards rather than upwards.

The Chevrolet Impala was intended to be a prestigious yet affordable model. It was the best-selling car in the USA in the 1960s, with several body styles and engines, mainly V8s, such as the 1962 409 SS (Super Sport), one of the first muscle cars, produced in just 15,000 units. The 1970 AMC AMX also falls into the muscle car category, with its 325 hp V8.

The Ford Bronco, particularly in its first generation like the 1973 model on display, is also a US automotive icon.

The exhibition is rounded off by 2 Batmobile replicas, one from the 1966 TV series, with its double cockpit and bubble windscreens. The second is a replica of the 1989 movie version, and it’s amusing to note the significant evolution in the space of twenty years!
