The Umberto Panini Maserati Collection has just reopened in a new building constructed especially for it. It is located a few miles from Modena, near the airport and the Modena racetrack. Umberto Panini and his family are world-famous for their sports sticker albums. Thanks to this business success, Umberto Panini was able to develop his car collection, and in particular save the Maserati collection from being dispersed.
The museum was long housed in a building on the large organic farm near Modena where Umberto produced his famous Parmesan cheese. The new location is more spacious and has allowed for a complete overhaul of the museum’s layout. Another significant change, reflected in its new name, is that the Panini Collection is now exclusively dedicated to Maserati, with motorcycles and cars from other brands having been sold.

The cars in the Umberto Panini Maserati Collection
The Maserati Umberto Panini Collection is known for its unique collection of Maseratis, which came from the bulk purchase of a collection created and developed by Maserati. The trident brand had carefully preserved a record of its history, but following one of many changes of ownership, the collection was almost dispersed in 1996. Alerted by the local authorities, Umberto Panini acquired this collection of 19 cars, which has since been joined by others.

The Maserati Umberto Panini Collection exhibits several unique and iconic models such as the 1934 6C/34 and the 1953 A6GCS “Berlinetta,” of which only four were produced. The famous Tipo 63 “Birdcage” owes its name to its “birdcage” chassis, made up of more than 200 small-diameter tubes, combining strength and minimum weight. The 250 F is one of Maserati’s most iconic racing cars, winning the F1 world championship with Juan Manuel Fangio in 1957. The 420 M “Eldorado,” which combines a reinforced 250F chassis and a 4.2L V8 engine, is best known for its livery in the colors of the ice cream manufacturer “Eldorado,” undoubtedly the first external sponsorship in the automotive world to appear on a race car body.

Among the (small) series cars, we can mention the sublime 3500 GT and 5000 GT, Ghibli (the 1967 model), Quattroporte, Bora, and Khamsin. The museum also exhibits a number of Maserati concept cars and design studies. Of particular note is the Alfieri concept, presented at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show to commemorate Maserati’s centenary and inspired by the Maserati A6 GCS/54.

Beyond the cars
Numerous posters and photos decorate the walls, retracing Maserati’s history from its origins to the present day. A shop sells books, posters, drawings, and miniatures. Ample free parking is available.
