As its name suggests, the Great British Car Journey Museum invites you on a great journey through the history of the British car industry. So, we see here only cars made in England, and the visit is interactive thanks to the digital tablet provided to visitors, which allows to discover more information about the cars exhibited and the actors of the industry.
Cars
The Great British Car Journey has around 200 classic cars and rotates presentation to permanently exhibit more than 130 of them. The journey takes you through the golden age of British car design and manufacturing, from the 1920s and the Austin Seven to recent productions. The presentation is organized mainly in chronological chapters, with 2 exceptions. A chapter is devoted to the company Rootes Brothers, which was once the largest car dealer in England, but also a manufacturer with the purchase of manufacturers in difficulty such as Hillman, Humber or Sunbeam… while another chapter covers Ford and Vauxhall production, subsidiaries of US manufacturers established very early in Great Britain.
The collection covers the variety of the industry, with popular cars like the Austin Seven, A30 and Mini, the Morris Minor, the Ford Escort, Capri and Fiesta and Vauxhall (subsidiary of General Motors), Austin and MG roadsters, the most luxurious Jaguar and Rolls Royce, the iconic Land Rover, or the more confidential sporty Jensen Interceptor, Reliant Scimitar or Sunbeam Alpine. Let’s mention a few passenger cars, such as a 55-year-old Mini with barely 8,000 miles on the clock, the latest MG Metro out of the factory, or a Morris Minor “Millions”, a special series of 360 units manufactured to celebrate the production record.
Besides cars
One of the originalities of the Great British Car Journey is to offer a package to drive one of the cars of the museum. A shop offers photos, posters, books, scale models, T-shirts and souvenirs, while a café allows visitors to eat or relax while tasting local products.
