The forgotten photographs

Lorraine Automobile Museum, Nancy, France

July 5 to August 31, 2025

This summer, the Lorraine Automobile Museum is offering visitors the chance to relive the history of automobile through a hundred old photos. In fact, the photos on display have been printed from old negatives. These negatives come from Gilles Tonnelier, a local collector and enthusiast. Today, cars are commonplace, and enthusiasts mainly photograph rare or exceptional cars.

But at the beginning of the 20th century, the automobile was still a curiosity, and its development would have a profound impact on the landscape, urbanization, and the lives of residents. Photography is, of course, a privileged witness to all these changes, hence the idea of the Lorraine Automobile Museum to organize a major photo exhibition. Around a hundred photographs have been printed from these old negatives, showing the evolution of the automobile and society around it.

The photos on this page belong to Lorraine Automobile Museum, no right of reproduction without the express permission of the museum.
